The Advocate’s Materials

You have chosen to intercede on behalf of a person coping with serious mental illness.  The choice you have made is a brave one - advocacy will bring many challenges and can be frustrating.  The first rule is to take good care of yourself while you engage in this work.  To get started, please take advantage of the following materials.  They will help you in your work.

The Manual

A 126-page manual is included with the one-day workshop.  You may purchase a downloadable version if a workshop is not available.  The workshop provides interactive exercises and group support as you improve your advocacy work.

The manual investigates the problems faced and how to overcome them.  Material includes background on the importance of assessment and how critical it is to recognize obstacles.   It presents a family psychiatrist’s viewpoint on the professional’s and family’s roles.  The manual shows how to organize and develop strategies, a crisis plan, and the importance of a paper trail.  It reviews and offers sample letter writing as an essential tool.  It emphasizes communication and the importance of setting boundaries for the beginning of family healing and more.
